Sam Says

I am Sam.  I am here to tell you guys about Cattabis.

A lot of cats have been asking me about catnip.. so let me give you some answers.

What is Catnip?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is the common name for a perennial herb belonging to the mint family.

Why do I love it?

Catnip contains a natural chemical nepetalactone, which induces a harmless physiological reaction in some cats.  Cats have a special gland on the roof of their mouth (Vomeronasal gland) used to recognize other cat's pheromones. Nepetalactone, has a similar composition as those pheromones.

Do all cats love catnip?

Up to 75% to 85% of cats react to nepetalactone.  The trait seems to be inherited.  Very young kittens and some very senior cats are less likely to react.  Even tigers, lions and leopards can enjoy catnip!

Can I overdose or get addicted?

Catnip is neither harmful or addictive.  Us cats know when we've had enough! You'll walk away when you've had enough..... but in a day or two... it's just as good as the first time!

What can I expect from my catnip or catnip toy?

Cat euphoria! Depends on if you smell it (toy) or eat it (straight up).  Everyone's a little different.. some rub it, some roll on it, lick it, chew it and some run around like lighting! Stimulation!

Is catnip good for me?

It surely does make a long, cold Canadian winter much easier to take!  Gives me some fun and exercise when I can't go outside and I get SO BORED!  I also tend to put on a few pounds in the winter, so it's better if I'm active.

My people use it on the scratching post to keep my brother from clawing the couch! They also sprinkle it around when he gets a new bed.

What's the best way to store my toy or my catnip?

UV rays and humidity are the enemies of catnip, so keep your toy in an airtight container or bag, out of the sun and try to keep it dry.

Should I share my catnip with my people?

Of course it has uses for humans too. They make a tea out of it and it helps calm them and helps them sleep. Catnip has a sedative effect on humans and it used for anxiety and stress. They also use it as a digestive aid as catnip has a relaxing, anti-inflammatory effect on intestines. Catnip is also an effective mosquito repellent!   Don't let them use it all though!  Save enough for us cats!
